The sunset trek is the classic choice because the light is warm and the dunes cast long shadows. The sunrise ride is quieter, cooler and often the most photogenic moment of the trip. A full-moon night between the two is spectacular, though a new moon is actually better for stargazing because the sky is darker.

In summer the sand can be very hot, so most guides prefer the first hours of the morning or the late afternoon. Around midday the heat keeps most people off the open dunes.

Comfort beats fashion on a camel trek. Loose, breathable layers protect you from both sun and the cool desert evening, and closed, comfortable shoes make mounting and dismounting easier. The camel kneels to let you mount with the help of the cameleer. Hold on, lean back slightly as it stands, and let your body go with the gentle rocking motion — stiff legs tire quickly. Follow your cameleer’s instructions and never stand directly behind an animal without warning it.
