El Jadida
Portuguese citadel on the Atlantic — UNESCO-listed Citerne Portugaise.
El Jadida — the former Portuguese Mazagan — guards a UNESCO-listed 16th-century fortress whose sea-washed ramparts and Manueline cistern are among Morocco’s most atmospheric historic sights; the cistern’s reflected light shaft is beloved by photographers. It pairs easily with Casablanca or Essaouira: wander the ramparts, swim at Deauville beach, and eat grilled fish in the old port. The Moussem of Moulay Abdellah adds horsemanship displays in summer.
