Ifrane surprises first-time visitors: an alpine-style town of slate roofs and cedar forests in the Middle Atlas, nicknamed Little Switzerland, built by the French in the 1930s. Travellers on Fes–Merzouga routes pass through for the stone lion statue and nearby Michlifen slopes in winter; in summer the town is a cool escape. The cedar woods around Azrou shelter Barbary macaques and good birdwatching.
