Merzouga sits at the foot of Erg Chebbi — Morocco's tallest dunes, up to about 150 m, and the classic camel-trek sunset into a camp. The dunes are immediate and dramatic, and the village is built entirely to serve Sahara visitors.
Zagora is further south along the Draa Valley, past Ouarzazate, at the edge of the less-accessible Erg Chigaga. The dunes there are wider and more remote, and the approach feels like a real crossing of the country rather than a single evening ride.
Merzouga is the natural end of the Marrakech and Fes–via–Ziz Valley routes, supported by frequent tours and shared transfers. Getting there is straightforward.
Zagora is reached along the Draa Valley, a longer, more rural drive from Ouarzazate or Agadir. Public connections are thinner and most visitors arrive as part of a longer southern loop.
Choose Merzouga if this is your first Sahara, you have 3–4 days from Marrakech or Fes, and you want the iconic camel trek with reliable support. It is the busiest Sahara gateway for a reason.
Choose Zagora if you are doing a deep south loop, have more time, and want a quieter desert with the chance to see Erg Chigaga and the palm-fringed valley approach. It suits a 6-day-plus itinerary better.
Merzouga is busy in peak season and you will share popular viewpoints with other camps. Zagora is far quieter, and the experience there leans more toward solitude than spectacle.
