The two main Sahara ergs in Morocco are very different despite sharing the word "desert". This is a factual side-by-side, not a ranking.
About 28 km long with dunes up to roughly 150 m, Erg Chebbi is the Sahara most visitors picture: tall, climbable dunes within an hour of a supported village, with camel treks straight into a desert camp at sunset.
Because access is easy and there is infrastructure at the foot of the dunes, it is also the busiest. That means more tour options and more predictable support if the weather changes.
Erg Chigaga is wider and lower than Erg Chebbi, spread over a large area near the southern end of the Draa Valley. It is reached over a long, rutted track and has far fewer camps — which is the point for many travellers.
The dunes here are softer and shift more freely, the nights are darker and there is almost no light for miles. It suits travellers who want the Sahara without visitor infrastructure.
Pick Erg Chebbi for a reliable first Sahara: a supported camp, a sunset camel trek and a sunrise ride out, best from October to April. Pick Erg Chigaga if you are crossing the south anyway, have time, and want a quieter, more remote desert night with fewer dependencies.
