Morocco is bigger than the map suggests, and the highways are only part of the story. Here is an honest picture of the options — and why so many travelers end up choosing a private route.
Marrakech to Merzouga is about 560 km, but the realistic drive time is 8–9 hours — the route crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass before the road opens up past Ouarzazate. Fes to Merzouga is similar in time via the Middle Atlas and the Ziz Valley. This is why nearly every Sahara itinerary breaks the journey with stops in Aït Ben Haddou, the Dades or Todra gorges, or Midelt.
The train network (ONCF) is good along the Atlantic axis — Casablanca, Rabat, Meknes, Fes, Marrakech — and does not reach the south-eastern desert regions at all.
ONCF trains are comfortable on the northern axis and affordable; long-distance buses (CTM, Supratours) reach most southern towns including Ouarzazate and Errachidia, and are the budget traveler's workhorse. Grand taxis — shared cars running fixed routes — are an experience every Morocco traveler should try once on a short hop.

A private route earns its price whenever your plan involves the mountain roads and the desert: you stop where the view is good rather than where the bus stops, villages and kasbahs fit between the main legs, and the drive itself becomes part of the trip instead of the price of it.
It also changes what you can carry and when you move — sunrise at the dunes does not wait for a bus schedule.
