Both Marrakech and Fes are genuine gateways to the Sahara — but they reach Merzouga by different roads, with different scenery, different journey lengths and different itinerary shapes. Neither is universally "better"; the right starting point depends on the rest of your Morocco plan. Here is the honest comparison.

The two routes are fundamentally different

The Marrakech route crosses the High Atlas and runs through southern Morocco's greatest hits: Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge. It is the sight-rich road — but also the longer one, which is why three days is the shortest practical Marrakech format.

The Fes route climbs into the Middle Atlas (Ifrane, cedar forest), crosses the plateau at Midelt and descends the Ziz Valley to the dunes. It is generally the shorter drive to Merzouga, greener and more mountain-quiet in character, with fewer headline stops but striking landscape transitions.

Journey structure and length

From Marrakech: plan 3 days minimum for one camp night (two long travel days around it), 4 days for a comfortable pace with a real desert day. Most Marrakech tours return to Marrakech, retracing the corridor.

From Fes: the dunes are closer, so a 3-day loop is more relaxed, and the standout option is the one-way Fes → Merzouga → Dades → Aït Ben Haddou → Marrakech route — a 4-day crossing that sees the country once and finishes in Marrakech. If your trip continues south, starting in Fes is structurally efficient.

What you see along the way

Marrakech side: the High Atlas pass country, Aït Ben Haddou (UNESCO), Ouarzazate, kasbah valleys, the Dades switchbacks, Todra Gorge — five or six major stops, which is exactly why the journey needs days.

Fes side: Ifrane and the cedar forests with Barbary macaques, the high plateau around Midelt, and the long Ziz Valley palm oasis down to Erfoud and Rissani. Fewer named sights, but a dramatic cross-section of Morocco's landscapes.

Suitability: which traveller fits which city

Choose Marrakech when the southern sights matter to you, when your trip is centred on the Red City, or when you want the classic "greatest hits" desert road with time built in (4 days).

Choose Fes when you are arriving from the north (Casablanca, Rabat, Meknes, Chefchaouen), when you want the shorter drive to the dunes, or when a one-way desert crossing finishing in Marrakech fits your onward plans.

Doing both cities? The one-way crossing between them via Merzouga is the best-shaped Sahara itinerary in Morocco — you never drive the same road twice.
